More snow?

Okay, not so sure what's up with all this snow.  When does it ever snow in Georgia twice within a 2 week time period, just barely into winter?  And not just a dusting, but plenty for sliding and fighting and building a snowman.  Maybe it has something to do with that recent story about the magnetic north pole moving.  Looks like it might be moving to Georgia.

My dogs like it...I think.

A Gift from Mother Nature

Two & a half inches of wonderful fluffy white today...an ice rink tomorrow.  Yay, I work from home and don't have to get out in this stuff.  Wait...working from home means I have to work tomorrow.

I Live In My Own Mind

For my Mississippi friend -

I live in my own mind
Ain't nothin but a good time
No rain just the sunshine
Out here in my own mind
I live where I can breathe
Ain't nothin but a cool breeze
Nobody that it won't please
Out here where I can breathe

DIY done!

Forgot to take the before pic.  This is after 3 weekends of digging.

My best friend for several weekends - good ol' mattock

Part of my meager crew.  I told him to help me dig...and sure enough, he walked over and started digging.  Not really where I needed digging, but I appreciated the effort anyway!

Landscape fabric - great for when it rained to keep the mud down between weekends, and muddy paw prints off my deck.

2 tons o' crush n run.  Back that dump truck right up to the spot!

Half ton of granite sand.

Big stacks of block and pavers.  So glad I made them bring the forklift back and move them close to the site.  My back is so glad I put my foot down.

Doing some supervising.

Voila!  Only 8 weekends.

Wish I could get rid of the red clay stains though.  Hoping my greenery will fill in and cover.

Finally, a weekend that doesn't end in exhaustion!  So, what shall I conquer next?

Patios Of Mice and Men

The ol' Scot poet Robbie Burns could not have been more right.  The best laid plans of mice and men often go awry.  In DIY, how true, how true.  My "little" paver project has turned into a never ending consumption of exhausting weekends.  I exaggerate of course.  The end is in sight after 5 weekends.  I think 6 should do it.  But you know, I would do well to remember Mr. Burns' wise counsel.

Sounds simple enough...a 9x18 paver patio with a 2' retaining wall on 2 sides.  Two weekends, maybe?  How hard could laying pavers and block be?  Not hard, until you start digging into hard-as-a-rock, dry as a bone, red clay soil.  A good soaking rain made it a little easier, until I dug into my ground line (yep, I failed to call before I dug.).  Turns out that was a plus, because I discovered the connector had corroded and the ground line wasn't even attached!  Fixable though, with dear old DIY master, Daddy, imparting electrical wisdom.  Wait, another problem....the ground rod sticks up too high for my pavers to be level.  Oh well, pound it down further...until I hit rock and it won't go anymore.  How bout we cut it off?  That works.

Now, the materials and another whole round of problems.  Good news, Lowe's delivers.  Bad news, they don't come at the scheduled time, and drop two pallets of pavers & block in my front yard.  A call to mgmt fixes that, and they come back with the forklift and put it where it should have been in the first place.  Lucky me, I get three extra free black widow spiders in one pallet!  They're in black widow heaven now, along with about 100 fish bait I accidentally chopped in two during the excavation.  More deliverable materials of crush n run and granite sand arrive.  But wait, I must've gotten a skimpy scoop, so not enough sand to cover, and they're closed on Saturday afternoons.  Good thing Lowe's is only 10 mins away.  Let's make a run for sand - 4 bags ought to do.  Nope, the sand was wet and compacts more, so 4 bags was not enough.  All the while, my dogs have no concept of the new command - "Get off my sand, I just leveled that!!!"  Another run to the store for sand and finally, I'm covered.

Laying the pavers and block went pretty fast, but cutting them was another story.  The wall block cut pretty well with a hammer and chisel, but the pavers...I busted 3 and decided the hammer and chisel method was not going to work.  I have plans to try a diamond blade circular saw.  Oh, wait.  Here I go again with those plans.

Missed op

The guy I posted about last, Andrew Peterson, did an awesome thing tonight and I hate that I missed it. He tweeted that he'd be in certain spot at 8:30 tonight under a bridge by the river in Greenville, SC...just him and guitar to play for whoever showed up.
His tweet - "This is where I'll be."
Then he tweeted again 2.5 hours later with a pic and thanks for all the folks that turned out. How awesome is that!!! Just him and guitar for 2 hours+, out under the stars, free to whoever walks by. Arrrgh...hate that I didn't know til too late. Would've gladly jumped in the jeep for the drive up 85 to join in. Glad I'm a fan of that kind of man, so generous with his talent. I bet he got as much a blessing as his audience. Sometimes, all this technology is pretty great stuff.
"I was blown away that all you guys came out. Thank you!"

New tune from an old favorite

So thrilled recently when one of my favorite singer/songwriters came out with a new album.  Andrew Peterson has been a favorite of mine for the past 10 years, and is in my opinion, an incredible undiscovered talent.  How lucky was I that he happened to play twice within a week's time at venues really close by.  Got to see him up close and personal and unplugged for two awesome shows.  From his newest album Counting Stars, "Dancing in the Minefields" is a sweet testimony to his Christ centered marriage.  While it's no promise that it will ever be easy, it's an encouragement to me that this kind of love exists and is worth the wait.

My favorite line -"When I lose my way, find me.  When I lose love's chains, bind me.  At the end of all my faith, to the end of all my days, when I forget my name, remind me."

Sing on, brother.
