Today was another free day. A few of us planned to check
out the Nice vegetable market in Old Town Nice. Wouldn't you know about the time it opened, the bottom fell out of the clouds and rain, rain, rain. The skies must have known it was our free day and knew it had a duty to keep with tradition. We hopped from awning to awning and I managed to find a 2 euro umbrella in the Nice version of a dollar store...or maybe it should be a called a euro store? It still works too...sure got my 2 euros worth. Spent the morning trying to stay out of the rain, and thankfully by lunchtime, the skies cleared. 
My friend Anna and I decided to be 
brave and take a city bus to a nearby resort town up the coast called Villefranche sur Mer. What a beautiful old town! We toured an old citadel dating back to 1543 called Fort Mont Alban, walked through a passageway under the harbor front houses dating to 1260 called the Rue Obscure, peoplewatched at the public beach of the Plage de la Darse, and dipped our feet in the very cold and pebbly crystal clear Mediterranean. It was a great laid-back afternoon diversion from our usual don't-blink-pace of touring.
Caught the bus back to Nice and ended the day with a nice Nice sunset. With the exception of the accommodations, Nice turned out pretty nice. (Did I set a record with the most use of the word "nice" in a post?)
